“You Can’t Save the World”

I would describe myself as being an ambitious person.  Sure, I have my mornings where I’d rather stay in bed and ignore the influences of the world but for the most part I try to do all that I can in order to be a productive person and improve the space in which I am inhabiting.

Despite my ambitions, there are times when I feel as though my efforts are as effective as screaming into the Grand Canyon.

"Globe Collection" by girlhula @ FlickrI separate my recyclables from the trash while I watch my neighbors dragging out their garbage but no recycling bins.  Then I wonder if my recyclables will even make it to any recycling facility.

I have been eating more fruits and vegetables for health reasons but wonder if my actions are as environmentally responsible as some people would want us to believe.  In order to grow our vegetables we fertilize our soils and eventually these nutrients find themselves flowing into the Gulf of Mexico, creating a dead zone where no life is able to be supported.

I try to conserve water by turning the faucet off while brushing my teeth, but my showers are too long.  I know that I don’t need to stand there with the hot water spraying on me, but it is my way of washing away the day physically and mentally.

There are countless areas in my life in which my efforts seem to be neutralized by my own actions or those of others.  I exercise as often as possible but will find myself snacking on junk food a couple of hours later.  I don’t use paper towels, but my girlfriend does.  I ride my bike to work, but drive more often.  I use rechargeable batteries but leave a cell phone charger plugged into the outlet, draining electricity.  I use non-toxic dish soap for my dishes but use Tide for my laundry.

Despite all of my “failings” I do whatever I can in order to make the world a better place.  Just because I have room for improvement doesn’t mean that I should give up on the things that I am doing right.  People tell me that I can’t save the world, and maybe that is true, but I strongly believe that although I am only one person I can make a difference.

I can improve my own life, my household, my neighborhood.  If I can improve my neighborhood, then I can improve my community.  If I am improving my community then I am improving my country and if I am able to improve my country then I am able to improve the world.  If we all started believing that we have the power to make a difference and the power to change the world, maybe we really can do something.

Individuals build a community and communities create our world.  Maybe I can’t change the world on my own but as a global community I have no doubt we are capable to doing great and many things.  Even the small changes are a step in the right direction.  Keep building upon those small changes and eventually you will be making a huge impact.

Defining “Rich”

"Poor & Rich" by Luo Shaoyang @ FlickrThe word “rich” is defined in the following way: “having wealth or great possessions; abundantly supplied with resources, means, or funds; wealthy”.  In other words, money makes us rich.  The more money we are able to amass or the greater the possessions we own make us rich.  If we have the funds we are rich.

I think that being rich has nothing to do with money.  A more accurate word for the above definition might be “wealthy”.  Having money or possessions does not make us rich.  Being rich is not about how many zeroes you have on your bank statements.  Being rich is about living a full and complete life, one which is happy and filled with joy and is free from want.  That is what makes a person rich.

Money doesn’t make you rich, family makes you rich.  Money doesn’t love you, but your family does.  Love them with all of your heart and soul.

Money doesn’t make you rich, experiences make you rich.  The stories you tell about the things that you’ve done with your life make you interesting.  No one cares about your money; no one that matters that is.

Money doesn’t make you rich, relationships make you rich.  Your friends are always there when you need a helping hand and are there during the good times as well as the bad.

Money doesn’t make you rich, community makes you rich.  Giving your time to your community can bring meaning to your life.  You have been blessed with a gift and being able to share that gift with people in need is a great way for you to live a rich life without needing to spend a single penny.

Money doesn’t make you rich, laughter makes you rich.  Laughter is the sound of happiness.  Even the “poorest” of folks still find moments of joy where they are able to laugh.  How many times when you are laughing are you thinking about money?

There are countless things in our life that make us rich that have nothing at all to do with money or objects.  We all need to make a living, but we shouldn’t become a slave to the idea that the more money we have the richer we will be.  Our time on Earth is finite and we need to be looking for other things in our time here which bring richness to our lives.  Each second that ticks by is one less second we could be spending with our wives.  Each second that ticks by is one less second we could be out exploring our world.  Each second that ticks by is one less second we are able to spend with our friends.  Each second that ticks by is one second closer to death.  Do you really need the money or have you just convinced yourself that you do?

You Have One Month Left to Live

"HDR - the empty bench" by emmedibi @ FlickrWe’ve all heard the question, “What would you do with your life if you were told that you only had one year left to live?”  How about one month, one week, one day or one hour?

If I was sitting in the doctor’s office and he told me that I only had a certain amount of time left to live I’d probably cry.  A lot of the things that I want to do in my life are long term goals.  They are things which I would need to prepare myself in order to accomplish.  Knowing that I only have a short time left on Earth would eliminate many of those goals from my list.

“You Have One Year Left to Live”

After my initial emotional breakdown I imagine myself working to achieve as much as possible.  I would likely quit my job because I couldn’t see spending my last few precious moments on Earth working unless I was doing something which I absolutely love to do.

The first thing I would do is research my family history and learn more about my ancestry.  I do not know much about my lineage and that has always been something which I want to learn more about.  Once I have been able to determine where my family name comes from I would travel to that area in Norway.  Hopefully during my visit I would be able to connect with some people who share a common ancestor.

After finding my roots I would spend as much time as I could traveling and seeing the things that I’ve always wanted to see like the pyramids in Egypt, Stonehenge and The Great Wall.  I’d want all of my closest friends along with me during my travels.

“You Have One Month Left to Live”

Having one month left to live would put a sense of urgency in my travels.  I would choose one or two places that I absolutely would want to go.  It would be hard for me to choose only one or two places, but my dream vacation spot has always been Bora Bora in the French Polynesian Islands.  I would travel there with my girlfriend and share the last moments of my life with her in the most beautiful place on the planet.

“You Have One Week Left to Live”

If my time was limited to one week of life I would abandon all of my personal goals and instead focus my attention on being with loved ones.  I see myself spending quiet time just talking and enjoying the moment of having them in my life.  I would go out and have some fun, maybe going to a concert or something where we could get lost in the moment and enjoy our lives living in the here and now.

“You Have One Day Left to Live”

If I had one day left to live I would spend that time with my girlfriend.  I see our time together being spent in the outdoors close to nature, away from everything and everyone.  This way we wouldn’t be distracted by the daily buzz of life as usual and could focus on one another entirely.

“You Have One Hour Left to Live”

One hour doesn’t allow much time to spend with people whom are important to me, so instead of trying to fit everyone into a last hour rush, I would write a letter to my loved ones detailing how important they are to me and how much happiness they brought to my life.  Doing this would allow me a chance to offer closure for the people close to me and also for myself, knowing that everyone in my life knows that I love them.

This activity is meant to show people what is important in their lives.  When you know what you value it is easier to focus your attention on working towards these goals.  For me, I am passionate about traveling.  My family and friends are the most important things in my life and while I have many goals, if I were given only a limited amount of time, family and friends would be priority over any personal goals I may have.

What would you do if you were told that you only had one month left to live?
